Frequently Asked Questions
Which team can I play for?
All teams involved in Hexagon will welcome new players. We encourage you to register with a team that is local to where you live but if you already have a connection with one of the clubs through a mate or otherwise, why not make them your first call. Contact details for each team can be found on the Teams Page. The games venues are rotated so we will all play at each team’s home ground at least once.
Where are the games?
Each month, the game takes place at the home ground of one of the participating teams on a rotating basis. All players will meet at that venue and play as a team/combined team subject to numbers.
What about referees?
We organise qualified referees to ensure standard is maintained as well as the fun. We don’t want the games getting too physical and it takes a specialist type of ref to handle these games. Adam Lysle is our referee co-ordinator who is a specialist in the over 35 format of the game.
What’s the format on the night?
Each team brings as many registered players as possible and we organise the teams accordingly. If a team has 15 players they can all play together and combined teams can be created if necessary. We play 20 min halves rotating teams so that everyone gets a run.
After the rugby we can all talk about how great we used to be and enjoy some food, a few beers, songs, speeches and the banter.
What about insurance?
All players must be registered with a team for insurance purposes. Hexagon organise the fixtures but do not operate as a team or club for insurance purposes. You will not be permitted to take the field without having registered with one of the participating teams.
Is this a competition?
No. This is a social series of games designed to get more players back in to the game at a time that doesn’t impact their weekend commitments. If you want play full competitive rugby then this is not for you. There are many local Subbies teams who will welcome new players looking for a full contact game. Message us if you want help finding a subbies club in the area.
Is Hexagon a team?
Hexagon Rugby is not a team - we work to create the opportunities for games to take place.
Do I have to play every game?
No. You can play as often as you like but to benefit from being part of a team we encourage players to play as many games as possible. There are approximately four weeks between games so plenty of time to recover!
What are the modified contact and game rules?
Modified over 35’s rules can be found via this link.
In summary:
No kicking outside own 22.
20 Minute Halves
Uncontested scrums
No lifting in the lineouts
No competing for the ball at the ruck.
Don’t be a dickhead - we’ve all got to go work on Monday.
Why do you call yourself Hexagon Rugby when there are seven teams?
The original plan was for 6 teams to participate but when a 7th local team was interested we couldn’t say no.
(Keep it to yourself. No-one else has noticed.)
